A Potted History

The Fairburn Community Centre and Recreation Field Committee is a registered charity (No 523598), all Annual Chairs Reports, Constitution and previous Annual Accounts can be viewed on the Charities Commission Website; please click here to view our reports.

According to the constitution the original Welfare Centre Committee was formed in 1971, the land associated with the recreation field belonged to CISWO, The Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation, and was dedicated to the local Parish Council for the construction of a welfare centre for the residents of Fairburn.  Many older residents will remember the “old tin hut” pictured here.

In the year 2000 the then Community Centre committee began applying for grants for the demolition and construction of a new community centre. With the help of funding from Selby District Council, Ferrybridge Powerstation, WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental) the Welfare Hall was demolished in 2001 and a new centre constructed on the site; the build costs were on the order of £200,000.

The present Community Centre Trustees would like to thank the former and existing members for all their efforts and work in achieving this:  Mick Rhodes, John Shaw, Alan Robinson (existing Chair), Jill and Graham Edwards, Karen Robinson (existing Treasurer), Helen Teasdale (ne Slack), Alyson Edmunds, Denise and Cliff Milner, Janet Robson (former Secretary), Pat Wagstaff, Lesley Berry.

The present Trustees are:-
